The tourist experience of Hastings, MN, wouldn’t be complete without a trek through its over 30 miles of paved bike trails. These take you along the Mississippi and Vermillion Rivers and into the heart of some of the most majestic scenery Minnesota has to offer. Don’t let the winter weather stop you from biking this season. Whether you plan on touring through the breathtaking Hastings winterscape or anywhere else, take heed of these basic winter biking do’s and don’ts to stay warm and safe.

Do:

Dress in layers.

It’ll be cold before you begin riding and for a short time after. As you warm up, you won’t need as much clothing to keep you warm. If you dress in a single layer, you run the risk of sweating under your clothes, which will leave your skin cold and clammy. Dress in layers that you can easily remove and add back on as your temperature changes.

Stay hydrated.

TouristStaying hydrated on your ride is just as important in the cold weather as it is in the summer sun. Biking works up a sweat, and you’ll need to replace those liquids. Use a double insulated mug or thermos to keep beverages, such as coffee or broth, warm. Place water bottles in your backpack and add in a little warm liquid to prevent them from freezing.

Don’t:

Ride without fenders.

Install fenders on your bike prior to your ride. Winter biking is messy. The spray from riding through puddles and slush can get all over you, your gear, and the people riding next to you. Wash away any accumulated grime and check all the moving parts to make sure they’re in good shape. Oil your chain, check your tires, and check for wear on the rims and brake blocks.

Forget the sunscreen.

Apply sunscreen to any skin exposed. UV rays from the sun are still present in the winter. The snow on the ground reflects as much as 90% of UV radiation, increasing your risk of sunburns.
