Winter can be a stressful time for pets, as cold temperatures and inclement weather can lead to more time indoors and a rise in health issues. Although you should continue with your quarterly pet exams, you should also take extra precautions so that your furry friend stays warm this winter. Using these tips will keep them safe, healthy, and secure throughout the winter months.

5 Winter Pet Safety Tips

1. Keep Pets Inside

Cats should be kept inside at all times, especially once snow and ice begin forming. Cats tend to roam and could get hurt, stuck, or freeze to death if they're let out. Dogs can still be taken outside as long as the weather is good. If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your dog.

2. Dress Them Up

Buy your short-haired dog booties, a coat, and a hat. Use booties, especially when the snow is on the ground, a hat for the wind, and a jacket for any occasion. Try to dress up your pet when they're young, so they get used to it before winter arrives.

3. Don't Shave Them

4. Remove Common Poisons

Keep antifreeze, deicer, and other chemicals away from all pets. Store them in a high place where your pets can't reach it or keep it in the garage. For dogs, rock salt can become an issue. Dogs will sometimes lick the salt off of their paws when they come in from a walk. If that happens, you'd need to take them to a vet for a pet exam.

5. Dry Them Off

Just like humans, animals can get sick, develop frostbite, or contract hypothermia. Once they get inside after a walk, wipe them down with a dry cloth and make sure they have a warm place to sleep. Check on them to make sure they're warm 10 minutes after coming in from a walk.
