Although there are all kinds of orthodontic appliances available today, braces are a common and effective solution to dental imperfections. Since they’re affixed to the teeth permanently, though, your dentist will explain that they require a few minor lifestyle adjustments, including changing your diet. The following guide will help you understand how to approach this change.

What Foods Should You Avoid?

Sticky or Chewy Candy

Sticky candies like toffees, caramels, and gummy bears can damage your braces as you chew, which may extend the duration of your treatment. Additionally, small morsels of the candy could get stuck in hard-to-reach places and contribute to decay.

Popcorn

dentistBecause they’re so hard, popcorn kernels can dislodge brackets and bend wires. As such, it’s wise to opt for softer snacks for as long as you have braces. Other hard foods that have the potential to cause damage include nuts, bagels, pretzels, chips, and crackers.

What Foods Should You Eat?

Soft Produce

Consuming a variety of fresh fruits and veggies is part of a balanced diet. For those who have braces, soft fruits are perfectly fine as they are, including bananas, mangos, and pineapples. When eating harder fruits, though, like apples and pears, slice them into small pieces first. Biting directly into an apple or pear is a recipe for loose brackets and broken wires.

Similarly, you should avoid the crunchiest vegetables, like carrots and celery, unless they’re cooked. However, leafy greens are perfectly fine to enjoy with braces, as are avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

Seltzer Water

Dentists advise patients with braces to avoid soda because of its high sugar content. The brackets and wires make it hard to clean all the nooks and crannies where sugar and, subsequently, plaque can accumulate. To satisfy your craving for carbonation, stock up on sugar-free seltzer water instead.
