Holiday decorations can last many seasons if you take good care of them. Because they spend most of the year in storage, you’ll want to prepare them carefully before placing them in your unit. This will keep your decorations in pristine condition, protecting them from damage and keeping them conveniently out of your way, so they’re ready for use during the next holiday season.

A Storage Guide for Holiday Decorations

1. Christmas Lights

Christmas lights are notorious for getting tangled or broken, so take special care with these. You can wrap the lights around a tension rod and place them in a cardboard box.

If you don’t have a rod, wrap each strand around your forearm to form a loop, then use twist ties to secure the circle in a few locations. Place each loop of lights in its own plastic bag. Finally, store the lights in a plastic sealable bin to protect them from insects, which may chew through the cords.

2. Ornaments

Wrap each ornament in tissue paper or bubble wrap first. Then, place the entire box inside a plastic sealable bin to protect your ornaments from moisture while in the storage facility.

3. Artificial Trees

Your artificial tree likely arrived in a cardboard box, but this isn’t the best option for storage. Instead, buy an appropriately sized Christmas tree bag or box, which won’t deteriorate over time.

To pack it, start by taking apart each section of the tree. Place the bottom section in first, sliding it in so the branches are pressed upward against the “trunk.” Place the middle section in next, with the pole pointed toward the center. Place the top section and tree stand in the middle of the two. Store this box or bag somewhere it won’t be crushed by other items; you don’t want to stack anything on top of it.
