When temperatures cool off and you start preparing for the winter, deciding what to do with your grill can be a challenge. Maybe you’re looking to put it away for the season, or maybe you want to leave it out and continue using it all year round. No matter what your decision is, follow this guide to ensure your grill is protected from the elements until springtime.

Using Your Grill in the Colder Months

If you want to continue using your grill all year long, maintaining and cleaning it regularly is essential. Clean your grate after every meal, and remove any ash that has accumulated. If it’s been a few weeks since you last grilled, use a wire brush or scraper to remove any char or food from the grates before you begin cooking.

If you use a charcoal unit, replace the charcoal with dry coals and keep the grill away from moisture if you can. It’s usually best to store your appliance in the garage or on a covered patio when you’re not using it.

Storing Your Grill for the Winter

If you've decided to store your grill for now, you'll need to winterize it first. Clean off the grate using a steam brush and warm water, and wipe away grease and extra moisture to keep it from getting rusty in storage. If you have a charcoal unit, clean out the basin that holds the coals with mild soap and warm water. Rinse away any of the remaining ash and wipe it down so it's dry and ready for winter.

You'll also want to wipe down any grease, food, or dirt that's lingering on the outside of the grill, and use a soft cleanser to remove any rust stains. After examining the wheels and thermostat for damage, cover the unit and roll it into the garage, shed, or basement.
