(Lincoln, NE) The Stephens & Smith Rehab team recently gave the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln a makeover to its outside grounds. Led by Supervisor Nick Zimmerman, the on-site crew made five concrete pours to complete a new courtyard and rejuvenate the church’s front steps. Although the project went without any major hitches, Zimmerman said the crew employees discovered a basement floor when removing the old steps — requiring them to tear off the caps and nosing to add 60 feet of footing and substantial rebar. “We had to use an engineer to make sure the foundation was OK to proceed,” he said. “But overall, it was a fun and challenging project. We had a lot of assistance from various employees to help us adjust to the step changes.” The 12 steps were 20-plus feet wide, and the bottom step was 36- feet deep. They were dry-rubbed for aesthetics. The project was completed in October, which ended up being an eerie month for several members of the on-site crew. “There was talk that the bathroom light in the basement was flickering on and off while people were in there,” Zimmerman said with a laugh. “I never saw it, but I wish I did.”
