Seeding your lawn is an effective way to grow lush, green grass throughout the changing seasons. However, you must take care of your seeded yard so that it continues to grow strong and healthy. Here are a few lawn care tips for grass that has been newly seeded.

Do:

Water immediately.

After you seed your lawn, cover the grass with about six to eight inches of water. This will ensure the top inch of the soil is moist enough for seeds to germinate. Spray the lawn lightly to prevent puddles and to keep the seeds from washing away.

Mow & fertilize.

lawn careAllow your grass to grow about three or four inches tall before mowing it. This will prevent it from drying out. Don’t mow wet grass, as it may damage the turf. Lawn care professionals recommend applying fertilizer approximately four to six weeks after the seeds germinate to make seedlings stronger.

Don’t:

Overwater.

After germination occurs, giving your lawn too much water will prohibit root growth and can cause seedlings to rot. Once seedlings sprout, you should water your grass once or twice per week, or when about half of the soil becomes dry and light in color.

Apply weed control too soon.

If you apply weed treatment for your lawn too soon, the seedlings may die. Wait about eight to 10 weeks after seeding, or once you’ve mowed the grass at least twice, to spray your yard for broadleaf weeds. Additionally, you can deter weed growth by keeping the grass moist and filling in bald patches.
