With proper technique, flossing keeps plaque and tartar from accumulating between the teeth and along the gumline. Because the thread reaches surfaces that bristles can’t, flossing is just as vital as brushing. Your family dentistry provider will be happy to show you how to floss properly at your next appointment. In the meantime, here’s some advice.

How to Floss Properly

1. Make It Part of the Routine

If you don't have time to floss after every meal, do so at least once a day. Family dentistry providers often recommend flossing before bed. Not only do you have more time to focus on the task at hand—especially if mornings in your home tend to be hectic—but you also eliminate plaque that might otherwise contribute to decay while you sleep.

2. Get the Proper Tools

family dentistryGenerally speaking, standard dental floss will dislodge plaque between the teeth. However, for those who struggle to handle the thread, have braces, or prefer a different approach, there are disposable or reusable flossers, interdental brushes, or water picks.

3. Use the Correct Technique

If you prefer one of the alternatives to floss, your family dentistry provider can show you how to use it properly. As for using traditional dental floss, start with about 18 inches. Wind it around your two middle fingers, leaving about two inches of floss between them.

Holding it snug, use your pointer fingers to slide it up and down between two teeth, making sure to curve around the base of each. Switch to a clean section before moving onto the next tooth, and repeat until you've flossed between all your teeth on the top and bottom.
