If you’ve made the upgrade to wireless internet at home, you’ll need to set up your router. This device transmits the wireless signal throughout your house so that your computers and phones can connect. The setup process is relatively straightforward. Use the following steps to ensure optimal internet service.

How to Install a Router

1. Place & Connect

Router placement is crucial to achieving the best service. First, find the modem that your internet provider connected to the wall outlet, as this is where your router will plug in. Ideally, it should be placed in the center of your home so every room receives a proper signal. If you aren’t able to run ethernet cables from a central area to the modem, at least keep the router away from metal or exterior walls that may interfere with the connection.

Next, use the included ethernet cable to connect the router port on the modem to the ethernet port on the router.

2. Update

internetLike many devices, routers will have software—called firmware—updates. These resolve bugs and other functional issues so you get better service. You’ll need to download a configuration app from the manufacturer’s website or install it with an included disc. Once in, you’ll find a Check for Firmware Updates option. Follow the in-app instructions to make the updates.

3. Secure

You’ll need to secure your router by creating a password. This will keep people outside your home from connecting and slowing down your system. In the configuration app, find the Connectivity option. There, you should select WPA2. Create a new password that includes upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. Finally, connect your devices, and make sure the internet is working.
