Your wedding reception presents an opportunity for those from different times in your life to come together. Family members that you don’t see that often, friends from high school, college, and old jobs, and those you spend time with on a regular basis get the chance to interact and possibly form lifelong connections. Help your guests make the most out of the wedding reception with these tips.

Do:

Throw pre-wedding events.

Schedule events before your wedding to give guests the chance to meet and chat. Engagement parties, bachelor and bachelorette events, and rehearsal dinners will let the people in your life get to know each other prior to the big day. Consider providing name tags for everyone to help them remember each other’s names without it being awkward.

Encourage dancing.

Ask some of your wedding guests, such as a few of the bridesmaids and groomsmen, to work as “party starters.” Have them lead other guests in specific dances, such as assorted line dances, including the Electric Slide or Cupid Shuffle.

Don’t:

Seat only familiar faces together.

wedding receptionYou can keep couples and other guests who know each other together; however, have at least a few unfamiliar faces at each table to encourage mingling. Consider adding unusual centerpieces or trivia questions about you and your partner to provide topics of conversation.

Force ice-breaking games.

Avoid turning your wedding reception into an ice-breaking game night. While you may want to include games such as treasure or scavenger hunts depending on your wedding theme or venue, don’t insist on participation if your invitees just want to eat, drink, dance, and relax.
