skid loader is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can have on a construction site. Its maneuverability and capacity to perform a multitude of functions by changing attachments place it in high demand on most projects. If you know how to use one, you’ll be in demand, too. To operate one safely, you must be properly trained and authorized to do so. However, in the meantime, here is a guide on how to use this equipment so you can decide whether to pursue further training.

Your Guide to Using a Skid Loader

How to Start It

Starting a skid loader is simple. Once you’ve entered the cab, pull down the roll bars and buckle your seat belt. Before you start the engine, adjust all components so you can reach everything you need to operate it safely. If the skid loader doesn't start, it may be because you haven’t done one of these steps—this is a safety feature in many newer models. Turn the ignition key one-quarter of a rotation; when you hear a beep, you can disengage the parking brake before fully turning the ignition key. You must override the gear safety mechanism by pressing the green button, and then you’re ready to begin.

How to Monitor It

There are many dials and dashboard lights to help you monitor the skid loader’s performance. Here’s what you need to keep an eye on while using it:

  • Temperature gauge to ensure you don’t overheat
  • Hour gauge to see how many hours you’ve used it
  • Fuel gauge to prevent you from running out of gas

There are also a variety of measurement tools compatible with different attachments. If you plan on using any attachments, get acquainted with all the safety information relevant to each part before you use it.

How to Control It

Skid loadersSkid loaders are controlled by left- and right-hand joysticks and foot pedals, and you can operate each side independently of the other. Your feet control the boom and bucket, instructing it to make emptying and scooping motions. Depending on the skid loader you’re using, you may make these movements with one of the joysticks instead.
