Having your boiler go out in the dead of winter can be inconvenient and even dangerous, especially during northern Alaska’s long cold stretches. While many common heating problems require the services of a skilled boiler repair expert, there are some common issues you can address yourself. Below are a few troubleshooting steps to try if your oil-burning boiler suddenly quits.

3 Steps to Take if Your Boiler Isn’t Working

1. Check the Oil

One of the first and easiest steps to take is to ensure the boiler has enough fuel. When temperatures are lower than normal, or when the weather is erratic, you might have gone through more oil than you think. If the gauge reads less than a quarter tank of oil, schedule a delivery and have a boiler repair expert come prime the system.

2. Check the Power Supply

Sometimes this switch can be toggled accidentally, so make sure the switch is in the “on” position. If it’s in the right position, check the breaker box to make sure you haven’t tripped a breaker.

3. Try the Reset Button

If you have oil in the tank and a power supply, turn your thermostat all the way up and push the boiler’s reset button. Make sure to only push this button once, as pushing more than one time could flood the system with too much oil. If the reset button doesn’t work, or if it doesn’t pop back into place, your boiler needs attention from a boiler repair professional.
