Today, accessibility is becoming an increasingly common priority for builders and architects. However, many homeowners still have to customize their properties to meet wheelchair accessibility standards. If you're beginning a kitchen remodeling project that'll make your home more inclusive, follow these steps.

Kitchen Remodeling Tips for Accessibility

1. Lower the Countertops

Kitchen countertops are designed to be around waist level for an average adult who's standing. However, this height isn't helpful for those in wheelchairs. To allow everyone to use the workspace, lower the countertops to between 28 and 30 inches. It's also essential that there's room for someone's seated legs underneath, so be sure there are no lower cabinets in at least one area of the kitchen.

2. Rearrange Outlets & Switches

Similarly, switches for lights, garbage disposals, and exhaust fans are typically at standing heights. By installing outlets and switches in lower places, you can make the kitchen a more functional space for those in wheelchairs.

3. Modify Appliances

Appliances such as microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers are typically installed too high for someone in a wheelchair, so make sure these features are no higher than around 31 inches off the floor. To make room for the foot platforms of a wheelchair, also ensure the dishwasher is lifted at least six inches off the ground. When it comes to the stovetop, choose a model where the burners are staggered, so there's no need to reach across hot surfaces from a seated position.
