If your windshield frosts up, it's impossible to see well enough to drive. Scraping away the ice can be time-consuming and difficult, which is why most drivers would prefer to melt it. Here are a few tips for properly defrosting your auto glass.

Do:

Start early.

Starting your car and giving it a few minutes to warm up before you leave is the easiest way to get rid of ice. If you have a remote starter, you can start it without stepping outside. Make sure to keep an eye on the car while it's warming up to ensure it’s working properly.

Use multiple heat sources.

Auto GlassTurning on the heat is a useful method. However, if you're in a hurry, try putting your hand against the windshield where the ice is the most difficult to remove. Your hand is warm enough to speed up the process, but not hot enough to cause damage to the auto glass.

Don't:

Heat it too fast.

You may want to melt the ice quickly, but avoid applying something too hot to the windshield. A sudden change in temperature can crack or completely shatter the glass in an instant. Never throw hot water or anything else hot on the windshield.

Use salt.

Salt is helpful for de-icing pavement, but it's corrosive to many of your car’s materials. If you want to create a chemical de-icer, mix one part water with two parts rubbing alcohol. Apply it with a spray bottle, and the ice will melt much faster.
