If you have recently been fitted for dentures, you may have noticed that it’s a bit more difficult for you eat than it used to be. Certain foods are also quite a bit harder to eat with dentures than others and require you to take special care when enjoying these snacks. Learn some of the most common foods to approach with caution so you can practice proper denture care.

Foods to Eat Carefully With Dentures

1. Nuts

denturesNot only are nuts difficult to chew, but they break into small, hard pieces that can get lodged underneath your dentures, making for a painful chewing experience. Most people chew on only one side of their mouth when eating nuts, which can result in dentures flipping up or coming loose. If you want an easier-to-chew snack that still packs the same heart-healthy benefits as nuts, try eating pitted olives instead.

2. Popcorn

The small kernel pieces inside popcorn can be especially painful when they get lodged underneath your dentures. They can also get stuck in your teeth and are quite difficult to remove. Instead of popcorn, try eating potato chips or puffed veggie crisps for a salty, crunchy snack that won’t hurt your mouth.

3. Sticky Candy

Chewy and sticky candy can easily get stuck in your dentures and dislodge them from your mouth. Avoid these kinds of candy and other particularly sticky treats in favor of softer sweets like pudding or ice cream. Sugar-free gum can also be a good alternative that’s better for your oral health.
