CoolSculpting® is a revolutionary treatment for stubborn fat deposits and lipomas. This process freezes and removes fat cells, allowing you to shed weight that won't come off with diet and exercise. When you visit your local medical spa for a procedure, here's what you need to know.

Before

Before you can schedule a treatment, your provider will want to talk to you about your condition, desires, and expectations. CoolSculpting is approved by the FDA for nine specific areas of the body and works only on subcutaneous fat, meaning fat right beneath the skin. Your doctor will only approve you for treatment if you meet the criteria, which usually includes being within 30 pounds of your ideal weight. The day of your treatment, dress comfortably, bring a snack, and don't take any painkillers beforehand since they can increase bruising and other side effects.

During

CoolSculptingThe CoolSculpting procedure doesn't involve anesthesia, so you'll be awake the whole time. Depending on which areas you're getting treated, it can take about half an hour to an hour per area. The treatment causes numbness, pinching, and pulling sensations for part of the procedure, usually about five or 10 minutes. You can read or use electronics for a large portion of the time.

After

It takes a few months to see the full results of your treatment. For the first few weeks, expect some swelling; you can wear compression clothing to help control it. Other than that, you should dress for comfort. Bruising, aching, cramps, itchiness, digestive trouble, numbness, redness, and tingling are all normal and go away on their own. Use over-the-counter medications to manage discomfort.
