When it comes to beating the heat and humidity in Hawaii, nothing compares to the quick-cooling power of a high-quality air conditioner. Although this equipment can lower temperatures and keep your home comfortable, it requires ongoing care so that it can perform as well as it should. If you’re new to using an AC system, here are a few maintenance tasks that will protect your investment and keep it running efficiently.

How to Keep Your AC Functioning Properly

1. Change the Filter

HVAC systems use filters to screen out harmful contaminants from the air, such as dust, pollen, and allergens. Once these filters become clogged, air can’t pass through effectively, causing the system to work harder than necessary. To maintain efficiency and optimal indoor air quality, replace the filter every 90 days. If you have pets, follow a 60-day replacement schedule.

2. Seal Duct Leaks

ACIf you have a ducted system, air may be leaking out of the ventilation, which is a major source of energy loss. Periodically, feel around the ducts while the AC is running and look for drafty spots. If you feel cool air where it shouldn’t be, locate the source of the leak and seal it with duct tape.

3. Clear Debris From the Outside Unit

Traditional HVAC systems feature condenser units that are located outside of the home. These units cool warm air before directing it into the household. If leaves, twigs, and plant debris get stuck in the equipment, the system won’t work correctly. These obstructions may also encourage pests to take up residence in your AC.

4. Clean Coils & Fans

Clean the condenser coils and fans annually to ensure the system can effectively produce cool air. If these components are dirty, the system will take longer to chill a room. To clean the coils, turn off the entire system and remove the casing from the outdoor unit. Once you’ve located the coils and fans, use water and a gentle brush to scrub away dirt. Once it dries, replace the cover and turn on the system.

5. Schedule Annual Inspections

Although many AC maintenance steps can be completed on your own, it’s still smart to hire an HVAC contractor to conduct an in-depth inspection at least once a year. During this evaluation, the technician will detect and resolve small problems, such as replacing worn parts, before they turn into more complicated and costly issues.
