The holiday season is here, and it’s the perfect time to hang Christmas lights. Before you dig yours out of the garage or head to the hardware store to get the equipment you’ll need, consider these tips.

Tips to Remember When Hanging Christmas Lights

1. Plan the Setup First

Before you hang a single strand, plan out where you want to hang the lights. This will help to determine the equipment you’ll need and make your project run smoother. Popular spots include along the edges of gutters, around windows, door frames, garages, and around porch rails or banisters.

2. Choose the Right Lights & Cables

The two most popular lights are C7 or C9, and both can be found at your local hardware store or retailer. The main difference is the size. C9 lights are bigger and easier to see from a distance, while C7 lights use less energy. No matter your choice, make sure you get waterproof lights and extension cords if you need them for your desired setup.

3. Get the Necessary Hardware

Depending on where you’re hanging your lights, your hardware needs will vary. Gutter hooks may work for some setups, but others may require mounts designed for home or garage siding. The right hardware will hold your lights secure while doing as little damage to the building as possible. To stay safe and prevent electric shocks and fire hazards, invest in a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for all outdoor lighting.
