Your pontoon boat can provide you and your family with hours of fun out on the open water. With large decks and comfortable lounge areas, these vessels are made to party and relax. Without the proper watercraft TLC, however, your days of fun may be numbered. Here are three basic pontoon maintenance tips you should remember.

How to Take Care of a Pontoon Boat

1. Rinse After Use

Whether you’re using your pontoon boat in a lake, river, or ocean, rinse the craft carefully after use. Salt, algae, and even parasitic organisms can cling to the side of your boat or the lounge areas if you aren’t careful, so take the time to carefully rinse off the surface with clean water. Washing your boat is easy if you have access to a hose or power washer. Simply spray the surface with low pressure, and let the boat dry before putting on the cover.

2. Dry Interior

If you have standing water, use a wet/dry vacuum to remove as much as possible. Soft, lint-free towels can help remove additional moisture from upholstery.

3. Schedule Regular Engine Maintenance

To keep your engine working properly, schedule regular maintenance whenever you notice a problem. If your boat struggles to switch gears or has trouble starting up or staying on, work with a boat repair professional as soon as possible. Maintain the engine in the offseason by having a tuneup and needed repairs done before storage. Fuel stabilizers will help prevent engine sludge formation.
