A drainfield is an essential part of your septic system. Keeping it in good shape is just as important as regular septic tank cleaning. Your drainfield is responsible for holding water until it can be absorbed in the ground. When it isn’t functioning properly, you’ll have drainage problems indoors, wet spots in the yard, and a foul odor outside. Here are a few ways to keep the septic drainfield healthy.

How to Protect the Septic Drainfield

1. Don’t Plant Greenery Over the Drainfield

Since the ground surrounding the drainfield has extra moisture and nutrients, planting on it may be tempting, but you need to be careful with what you plant. Trees and shrubbery that grow large will develop a network of deep roots that can damage the leach lines.

2. Avoid Overuse of the Septic System

3. Schedule Regular Septic Tank Cleaning

If you’ve been pouring grease or solids down the drain, sludge may be developing in the tank. If this accumulates, the buildup will enter the leach lines, damaging the drainfield.

Book regular septic tank cleaning appointments to prevent sludge buildup. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends getting your system professionally inspected every three years. Most household tanks will need to be pumped every three to five years.
