Many patients with Parkinson’s disease have “off” periods when tremors and other symptoms return between doses of medication. Fortunately, in August, the FDA approved istradefylline (generally known by the brand name Nourianz®) as an add-on to other treatments for Parkinson’s disease to alleviate the severity of symptoms during off periods. This powerful new medication is already available by prescription, and it could help thousands of patients who are dealing with the symptoms of this debilitating disease.

What Is Nourianz?

Nourianz is a new and effective approach to treating Parkinson’s. Its effects are different from those of any other available medication for the disease. This drug is classified as an adenosine A2A antagonist, which means it blocks the neurotransmitter adenosine. Depleting the levels of adenosine in the brain naturally increases dopamine, the chemical primarily affected by Parkinson’s. When combined with other treatments for Parkinson’s, clinical trials of Nourianz showed a significant reduction of “off” time when compared to placebos.

In combination with other treatments for Parkinson’s, Nourianz may provide relief for thousands of patients whose lives have been impacted by this serious disease.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s occurs when cells in the brain responsible for producing dopamine become impaired or die off. One of the most important roles of dopamine is transmitting messages between areas of the brain responsible for complex, purposeful movements, Parkinson’s typically results in involuntary tremors and loss of motor control. While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, Nourianz and other treatments can help patients regain certain functions and slow the progression of the disease.
