Even if you’re an avid gym-goer, maintaining your diet and exercise routine during the holiday season can prove challenging. However, with proper planning and commitment, you can easily stay on track with your fitness goals. Here’s how to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the holidays.

How to Continue Diet & Exercise During the Holidays

1. Make a Plan

Before the party and dinner invitations start coming in, develop a plan to navigate the season. Since most of the festivities will likely be in the evening, devote time in the mornings to hit the gym and work out. Fit in quick workouts on busier days — some exercise is better than none.

2. Have Healthy Snacks

gymWhen you’re eating big, hearty meals with your loved ones, it’s easy to lose track of your intake. Avoid overeating by having healthy snacks before the party. Greek yogurt with fruit, veggie or grilled chicken wraps, trail mix, and hard-boiled eggs are all nutrient-rich options that will stave off hunger without ruining your appetite for the night.

3. Stay Hydrated

Many forget to drink water during the festivities but staying fit means staying hydrated. Not only is hydration essential to your wellbeing, but it can also help you stick to your diet. Studies suggest that drinking water is associated with a lower intake of calories, sugar, fat, sodium, and cholesterol. Try to drink a glass of water before every meal.

4. Get Moving

Much of the holiday season is spent sedentary. Prolonged sitting can increase your risk for heart disease and diabetes, so rather than planting yourself for the duration of the game or chatting with family for hours on end, take breaks every 30 minutes to get up. You don’t need to head to the gym, but do some walking or stretching to get your body moving.

5. Indulge for One Day

It’s not uncommon for fitness enthusiasts to “slip up” and indulge at the holiday party, then feel guilty about it later. Remember that a single meal is not likely to ruin your diet. Go ahead and enjoy your holiday dinner — just don’t be tempted to take home the leftovers.
