Oil-fired boilers and hydronic systems are some of the most reliable and energy-efficient options available for heating your home today. Heat loss is minimal with these systems, and oil works better than gas and forced air when it comes to seriously cold temperatures. However, that doesn’t make these products infallible. If you run into heating issues this winter, the following guide will help you determine your next steps and whether you should call a heating contractor.

3 Fixes You Can Perform Without a Heating Contractor

1. Check the Settings

The first step of every troubleshooting guide is to check the on/off switch and settings on your heating unit. Make sure everything is set up properly before proceeding to step two.

2. Top Off the Fuel Source

3. “Bleed” the Radiators

When a radiator system has trapped air, it won’t heat properly. To release the air, you’ll need a rag and a radiator key, wrench, or flathead screwdriver, depending on your heating system model. Once you have these tools available, turn off the boiler and wait for the radiators to cool.

Next, hold the rag beneath the valve on the side of the radiator with one hand and open the valve slowly with the other. As trapped air releases, water might drip from the opening, and you can use the rag to catch it. Wait until the air completely hisses out. Finally, close the valve. Repeat this process for every radiator in your home.

When You Need to Call for a Professional

Leaks & Pressure Drops

You can usually spot a pressure problem if the first floor in a building is warm but the top floors are cold. You might also see pooling water around the boiler if there’s a leak. If you think there could be a leak or another reason for a sudden pressure drop, don’t put yourself at risk. Call a professional to assess the situation safely.

Preventative Maintenance

Any mechanical appliance needs maintenance, and your boiler system is no exception. Most households with boiler heating systems need at least one cleaning and maintenance appointment per year.
