Adding a swimming pool to your home can be an exciting prospect, but there are a lot of decisions to be made as well. One choice you’ll need to make is the color of this water fixture. The following guide will help you understand what factors affect the appearance of your pool.

What Color Should You Choose?

Pools are finished with plaster, aggregate, or a liner, all of which come in a variety of colors. The color you choose will provide a different aesthetic.

  • Light Blue: A lighter blue finish creates a lighter look. The color is also less likely to fade over time if it’s on the lighter side, which means fewer changes in your pool’s look throughout the years.
  • swimming poolDark Blue: If you choose dark blue, your pool water will be darker because it will absorb the sunlight. It will also hide dirt and debris that sinks to the bottom. The dark color can also help warm up the pool water.
  • Bright Blue: The vivid color of this finish is even brighter when it’s in direct sunlight. This color also goes well with most landscaping and outdoor furniture options.
  • Aqua: While blue has always been a popular choice for swimming pools, aqua is gaining in popularity. That’s because it can make a pool look like a tropical lagoon.
  • Tan: Tan swimming pools are similarly becoming popular because they mimic the look of sand on the beach.

How Does Depth Affect the Color of Your Pool?

No matter which color finish you choose, the hue will look much richer on the deep end of the swimming pool. Just like the ocean, the deeper the water, the darker the color. If you are in the shallow water of the ocean, you can see the sand clearly. But if you take a boat farther out into the water, the light from the sun can’t reach the bottom, making the ocean seem darker.
