Vehicle owners must perform auto maintenance to ensure their cars are in top shape, last for many years and operate safely. Car care ranges from cleaning the undercarriage to maintaining the tires, brakes and fluids. Here is an introduction to a few tasks that’ll keep your ride in top shape.

Auto Maintenance 101

Monthly

Top off the windshield wiper fluid every month to ensure you’re ready to clean the glass in inclement weather. Check the tire tread by placing a penny into the deepest part of the tread with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing the center of the wheel. If you can see his entire head, it’s time to get new tires to provide better traction. Additionally, get a car wash to remove bird poop, berries and flower petals that may mark the exterior paint.

Every 3,000 Miles

Every three months or 3,000 miles, it’s time to check that all the lights are working. Have someone stand outside the vehicle while you turn on the head and taillights, the turn signals and the brakes. This is a great way to learn if the bulbs are burnt out, so you can change them to avoid a ticket.

At this time, top off the windshield wiper fluid, check the tire treads and get an oil change. Bring the vehicle to a mechanic to change the engine oil filter and fuel filter to keep the engine clean. They’ll also inspect the belt condition to look for cracks and damage and ensure there is ample power steering fluid to maintain control of the vehicle easily.

Every 6,000 Miles

auto maintenanceEvery six months or 6,000 miles, it’s time to assess the dashboard lights to ensure they’re not indicating an issue. If you notice one, head to an auto maintenance shop where they’ll use a diagnostic tool to assess the problem before providing the repair.

Follow all the three-month care tasks at this time, as well as making sure the chassis is lubricated and the hoses are intact. Ask a mechanic to assess the brake pads to ensure the vehicle is responsive and safe. Consider updating the windshield wiper blades to better move precipitation and debris as these rubber arms may crack or dry out over time.

Every 12 Months

Once a year, have a mechanic follow all the auto maintenance to-dos above while also checking the steering and suspension. Most vehicle manufacturers also recommend aligning the wheels every 2-3 years, so add this task if you’re in the right time frame.
