When the weather is frigid outside, it can be tricky to know how best to bring in the kinds of fish you want during your next trip. While fishing in the cold presents some challenges, you can enjoy better luck by investing in the right boat supplies and switching up your routine slightly. Here are a few tips for fishing in cold weather.

Advice for Fishing in Cold Weather

1. Dress in Layers

Instead of wearing what you would typically wear fishing, dress in multiple removable layers so you can adjust your gear as the weather permits. For instance, wear comfortable underwear, warm jeans, an undershirt, a flannel, a fleece jacket, and a coat over the top so you can adjust what you wear throughout the day.  And it may sound funny, but wearing nylons is a great way to start your layering.

2. Move Slowly

You move slower when it is cold, and fish do too. Focus on leaving your line in the water a little longer than usual to give fish the chance to access your hook. Remember that you may have a tendency to speed up, so try to slow down, take it easy, and enjoy the day.

3. Be Generous With the Bait

Be generous when you bait your hooks, and consider warming bait in your hand or pocket before putting it on your line. Make sure to pack plenty of bait, so you don’t run out during the day. To make warming bait easy, consider packing along some hand warmers in your boat supplies.
