Your car’s starter is a small motor designed to use the power from the battery to get the engine up and running. When vehicles don’t start up properly, people often assume the battery is the source of the problem. However, it could also be a starter issue. Learn more about the signs to look out for to help you determine what type of auto repair is needed to rectify the issue.

How to Tell When Your Vehicle’s Starter Is Bad

1. Grinding Noises

To start your car, the starter has to push against a set of gears in your engine called the flywheel and pinion gear. If any of the components are out of alignment or worn down, they may make a grinding or clicking noise. Even if your car does start, have your auto repair shop look into those sounds.

2. Smoke

This can cause blown fuses or circuits that produce smoke under your hood. If you see or smell smoke during this process, stop trying to start the car and have it towed to an auto repair shop.

3. Lights With No Engine Power

If the lights and electrical systems in your vehicle power up when you turn the key, that means your battery at least has some power. But if you continue to turn the key and the engine doesn’t fire up, the starter has likely malfunctioned and isn’t able to deliver battery power.

4. Oil Leak

An oil leak that soaks the starter can decrease its ability to push against the gears of the engine and dramatically shorten its life span. If you notice oil leaking from your vehicle, have it checked out right away before you need to replace the starter completely.
