Getting on a snowmobile and heading out into a winter wonderland is a great way to explore the outdoors. However, snowmobiling can be dangerous if you’re a beginner and don’t know a few helpful tricks. Here are do’s and don’ts for the day you offload those snowmobiles from your trailer

Do:

Dress for the occasion.

While snowmobiling, the majority of your day may be spent in the cold, surrounded by snow. Wind temperatures can also feel much cooler if you’re riding your snowmobile fast, so dress for the occasion. Wear multiple layers of clothing, and make sure everything you wear is rated well for warmth, even if it gets wet.

Learn to communicate.

trailersMuch like riding a bike, you should learn the hand signals necessary to communicate to other drivers where you will be going. For instance, sticking your arm out to either the left or right side could indicate the direction you intend to go since others will likely be covered in gear and struggle to hear over their snowmobile’s engine. At the start of the day, gather by your trailer and snowmobiles while setting up and talk about the hand signals everyone in your group intends to follow.

Don’t:

Venture off trails.

If you’re not careful while snowmobiling, it could be easy to get lost or stuck, so stay on the established path. If you are brand new to snowmobiling, consider parking the trailer in an open field and riding around the area until you get the hang of things. When you feel more confident, take the trails, but only go as far as you feel comfortable.

Ride at night.

Riding at night is never recommended for new snowmobilers, so schedule your trips for the morning or afternoon. Create a loose schedule when you go with others so you can ensure everyone returns on time.
