Windows have a tendency to attract more dirt and grime than many other areas of a home. With a few simple tips, you can stay on top of dirty windows and enjoy a clear view any time of year. NuVue Products, a window installation and window replacement contractor in Cincinnati, shares a few insider tips for keeping those windows sparkling clean.

  • Use a small, wet brush to clean exterior sills and frames.

On the outside of your windows, remove any screens. Wet a small brush that has soft bristles, and gingerly brush away the dirt and buildup from around your windows and in the crevices of the sills and frames. Be sure to avoid the glass as a brush can potentially damage the surface.

  • Clean exterior glass with a cloth or squeegee.

Outside glass can be first wet with a hose, and then scrubbed with a clean, soft cloth and some heavy-duty window-cleaning solution. You can also use a squeegee to remove tougher buildup. NuVue's vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass windows are sturdy and built to withstand the elements, but you should always work carefully around any type of glass.

  • Wipe interior windows with a lint-free cloth.

To clean the inside of your windows, spray window-cleaning solution in a fine mist onto the window, making sure it doesn't drip; alternately, you can spray the solution directly onto a clean, lint-free cloth. Wipe from the top down.

  • Wash windows in the evenings or on cloudy days.

NuVue's window specialists remind us that sunlight makes window cleaner dry faster, which can result in streaks. To avoid this, wash your windows on a cloudy day or in the evening hours for a bit more control.
