As a car owner, remaining vigilant is the best way to keep your vehicle healthy. Even if you pride yourself on regular auto TLC, however, you might hear an odd noise that indicates there’s cause for concern. Knowing how to interpret the signals will make it easier to determine what auto maintenance services or repairs are necessary. 

4 Noises You May Hear Coming From Your Car

1. Squealing Under Hood

Over time, the rubber serpentine belt might fall out of position. If you hear a high-pitched squeal coming from under the hood, it could be the belt moving against the metal pulley. The strain could eventually cause the belt to snap, which means power won’t be transferred to other components. Before this happens, have an auto maintenance technician adjust or replace the belt.

2. Knocking Under Hood

A thud or knocking under the hood is a definite red flag. It could be caused by the engine misfiring from bad spark plugs. Carbon deposit buildup on engine cylinder walls can also cause combustion issues that manifest in a knocking sound. If rod bearings are loose in the engine block, you might hear a low knocking that becomes more noticeable as you accelerate.  

3. Squealing or Grinding When Braking

When you press on the brake pedal, it may produce a grinding sound as the car rolls to a stop. The commotion could point to the need for brake pad replacement. When the pads are worn down, the rotor and caliper grind together, creating the grating noise. If there’s no insulation on the pads or the anti-rattle chips are defective, you could hear an ear-piercing squeal while braking.

If the pads aren’t replaced in a timely manner, the caliper will eventually begin to grind against the brake rotor, causing more extensive—and expensive—damage. 

4. Rumbling From Rear

When exposed to extreme temperatures, the exhaust manifold expands and contracts. Over time, the movement can cause the casing to crack. The exhaust system not only directs gases away from the interior cabin, but it also dampens engine sounds for a quieter ride.

The rumbling you hear coming from the back of the car could be engine noises. When the manifold is compromised, there’s no way to contain the sound.
