Some occasions warrant a few words of appreciation for an event or person. It may be a simple event like Thanksgiving or a job promotion, or a more formal occasion such as a wedding or corporate event. A speech may be a bit too much, but a toast allows you to express your thoughts. Here are a few tips for making a memorable toast.

4 Tips for the Perfect Toast

1. Prepping

Whether you have five minutes or three weeks, you need to be ready. Focus the toast around the person, event, or announcement. Consider the audience you’ll be addressing and the location. A corporate event will likely be more formal than a birthday party.

2. The Introduction

Make sure everyone has a drink. Find a commanding area in the room and announce the toast. Start by introducing the person or event, not yourself. Keep the introduction short and avoid jokes and stories at this point.

3. The Story

Corporate EventThis is where you get to tell the audience who you are and why everyone is gathered around. The story can be humorous or sincere, depending on the occasion. Keep the story to a couple of minutes and stay fluid during speaking. Tripping over words is a sign of nervousness, and you’ll lose the audience’s attention.

4. The Toast

Finalize the toast with the raising of a glass, or clinking glasses with someone close. Include a final statement honoring the person or creating a call to action. For example, you can invite everyone to sit down and enjoy the dinner or other activities.
