Flat tires are among the most common issues you may experience on the roads. While they’re typically easy enough to replace if you have experience, a flat tire can put you in an awkward spot if you haven’t changed one before or if you don’t have a spare. Below, you’ll find a handful of helpful tips on how to avoid flat tires.

4 Ways to Prevent Flat Tires

1. Inspect the Tread

As you drive your vehicle, the tread will gradually deteriorate. When the depth falls below approximately one-sixteenth of an inch, your tires will be more vulnerable to punctures and flats. Check the tread depth by placing the edge of a penny into one of the tread grooves on each tire. If you can see Lincoln’s entire head, replace the tire to avoid getting a flat.

2. Check the Pressure

tiresOver-inflated tires are prone to punctures, while under-inflated tires are known to cause blowouts. Look at the recommended psi on the inside of your driver’s door or in your owner’s manual. Add or release air so that the PSI (pounds per square inch) remains consistent. Do this about once per month.

3. Schedule Rotations

Tire rotations are important because they ensure that the tread wears down evenly. Rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles to keep tread patterns consistent and minimize the likelihood of flats.

4. Drive Carefully

Though made from durable rubber, tires can only withstand so much impact. While driving, try to avoid potholes, construction sites, and uneven terrain that might damage your tires and result in flats.
