Having too many keys doesn’t just make for a bulky key chain. It can make it harder to find the key you’re looking for when you need it. In addition, a heavy key ring stresses ignitions and locking mechanisms, leading to broken keys and other problems you’ll need a locksmith to fix. If your key ring is getting out of hand, try these simple tips to organize them.

3 Key Organization Tips

1. Sorting

Take all keys off your key chain and lay them out in front of you. Do you know what each one is for? If not, create a pile of unknowns and one for keys you no longer use. Sort the remainder into piles for house keys, car keys, and work keys. Place like keys together on their own smaller key rings.

2. Labeling

Label each key to take the guesswork out of unlocking doors. Use a small piece of tape to label each with its function, or purchase key caps.

LocksmithKey caps are little plastic covers that slip over the tops of keys. They come in different colors to make keys stand out. You can use them to organize keys and aid memory. For example, you may use green caps for all house-related keys and purple for keys to your office building. Some cap brands incorporate labeling devices, allowing you to indicate in writing what each key unlocks.

3. Creating a Key Station

Create a station for all the keys you need but don’t use every day. Use a board with hooks, labeling each to designate where to hang various keys. Hang the board near a door for convenient access as you leave the house.
