You don’t expect the heater to stop working in the middle of the season. However, if you switch on the thermostat and notice there’s no warmth coming from the vents, it’s probably time to contact a heating contractor. Before you do, here are a few easy troubleshooting options to explore.

Furnace Troubleshooting Tips

1. Change the Air Filter

The air filter is designed to protect the furnace itself from the debris that enters through the return ducts when the heater runs. Hair, dust, pet dander, and other debris can quickly accumulate, causing the appliance to work harder than necessary to warm up your home. If you haven’t replaced the filter in a while, swap it for a new one to improve the heater’s efficiency.

2. Check the Thermostat

If you’ve confirmed that it’s in the correct position, but it still doesn’t work, turn off the power supply and check the housing. Old units might have interior buildup that compromises its functionality, such as corrosion on the wires due to leaking batteries.

In some cases, the solution could be as simple as replacing the batteries. Don’t handle the thermostat’s internal components, however; leave this type of complex work to a professional heating contractor.

3. Inspect the Breaker

Just like any other appliance that draws too much power, the furnace may have tripped  the breaker. Rule this out by investigating the breaker panel. If there’s a switch facing the opposite direction from the others, reset it by moving it back into place. Another solution is to turn it off entirely, then restart it.
