Windows are integral to both the design style and functionality of a house. When you're remodeling, it's essential to choose the right one for the room. For example, in the kitchen, you want something that can provide adequate ventilation; having a fixed pane that can't be opened wouldn't be suitable. There are plenty of types to choose from, but the guide below looks at some of the most popular.

A Guide to Window Design

1. Single- & Double-Hung

Prevalent and classic, hung windows have two operating sashes. In single-hung varieties, only the bottom panel slides up; in double-hung, both  sashes can move independently. Higher-end variations allow the window sashes to tilt inward to make cleaning easier.

2. Sliding

Another popular option, sliding windows have one or two panels that moves side to side. They often have a screen behind it to serve as a filter for outside debris. They're wider than either single- or double-hung varieties, so you can have more light and a broader view without sacrificing convenience and functionality.

3. Casement

windowsFor increased ventilation, casement windows are the way to go. Instead of sliding back and forth, they have a hinge at the side, so that they can open outward.. They're useful in rooms where moisture and airflow is an issue, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and cramped bedrooms.

4. Awning

Somewhat similar to casement windows, awning windows have a hinge at the top of the panel so that they swing out from the bottom instead. They carry most of the same benefits as casements, but they have the added advantage of blocking out rainfall too.

5. Picture Windows

Unlike the previously mentioned types, picture windows are fixed and are not designed to open. They vary in size; some are small with decorative grilles, while others can take up a majority of an entire wall. Because they have limited functionality, they're generally more affordable, so they're a smart way to bring in more natural light to areas that don't need more ventilation.
