You should expect that the items you place in storage will come out in the same condition as when you put them in. However, too much moisture in your storage space promotes mold, rust, and insect infestations. Before you move your items into the unit, here are a few simple tips to keep your items dry and safe during their stay.

How to Prevent Moisture in Storage Units

1. Inspect the Unit

Inspect the unit before you move your belongings into it. Scan the walls and ceiling for cracks or holes that may let water through. Once you’ve ensured that moisture can’t get in, it’s safe to move your items in. Re-check the unit every couple of months.

2. Pack Only Dry Items

StorageMake sure that everything you intend to pack is dry. If you wash clothing prior to storing it, make sure that each article is dry before boxing them. Check aquatic equipment such as bathing suits and scuba gear to make sure there’s no hidden water. Any moisture you introduce to the enclosed space increases the humidity in the unit.

3. Use Moisture Absorbers

Use kitty litter or charcoal to counteract humidity in the unit. Place charcoal in a bucket or on a metal tray in your unit. Make sure the briquettes aren’t touching your belongings to avoid stains. Replace the briquettes every 30 to 60 days. If you use kitty litter, open the bag and place it in the unit. Replace the bag every 3 to 4 weeks.

4. Use a Vapor Barrier

Purchase vapor barriers from your local hardware store and install them in your unit before moving your items in. Vapor barriers are thin pieces of polyethylene plastic or foil that act as a shield to protect your items from becoming too damp. Line the warm side of the unit’s wall and the floor to block external moisture.
