After loved ones die, surviving family members often place headstones at the burial sites. The grave markers are erected to honor the dead and help people navigate cemeteries to find their deceased relatives, friends, and acquaintances. When designing a gravestone for a family member, below are three basic elements to include.

3 Items to Inscribe on a Headstone

1. Biographical Details

So people can find the headstone easily, include the legal first and last name of the deceased. If there is room, include the nickname too. For example, John Allen “Scooter” Smith contains the nickname in quotes. On a larger surface, you could inscribe “Known as ‘Scooter’ to friends and family.” Also, include any official titles, such as doctor or military rank, and the date of birth and death.

2. Emblem of Importance

Many people incorporate emblems into the gravestone design, like the engraving of a seal from an organization the deceased was associated with, a portrait of the family, or an emblem with symbolic meaning. For example, angels and birds often represent a connection to Heaven and the soul.

3. Poem or Quote

If you can’t find the words, you can also look for a few verses from a poem or a book quote that articulates your feelings.
