If you have advanced tooth decay, your dentist may have recommended a root canal. This procedure can save a tooth when the infection has spread to the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth. Without a root canal, additional infection, inflammation, or abscess may occur. To prepare you for your appointment, here’s what to expect from the treatment.

What the Procedure Is Like

On the day of your appointment, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic. You may also request general anesthesia to ease your nerves.

To keep saliva from getting in the way, the dentist will place a piece of rubber (known as a dam) around the tooth. When the anesthetic has taken effect, they will drill a tiny hole in the tooth and use small tools to remove the damaged pulp and nerves from the interior. They will then clean the area and seal the hole with a filling and crown to prevent bacteria from entering.

After the Root Canal

If you had general anesthesia, you may need to call a ridesharing service or a loved one to drive you home.

root canalYou should also expect sensitivity and some swelling in the first days following the root canal. Your dentist will recommend you only eat soft foods, like apple sauce, yogurt, or soups, for the first few days. Take any prescribed medications according to the directions provided by the pharmacy. Continue with your regular oral care habits, including brushing and flossing daily, and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days.

The dentist will also schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure the area has healed.
