If you’re heading south for the winter or are planning an extended holiday getaway, it’s essential that you prepare your plumbing system to withstand winter weather. Breakdowns and other problems can cause extensive water damage while you’re gone. By preparing your plumbing fixtures and piping for frigid temperatures, you can be confident your system will be in working order on your return.

How to Get Your Plumbing Ready for a Vacation

1. Look for Leaks

The smallest leak may lead to serious problems, so inspect your plumbing fixtures and exposed piping before you leave. Any trickles warrant repair or assistance from a plumber. Check your water heater, sprinkler system, and outdoor installations as well.

2. Insulate

You can apply pipe wraps and insulation sleeves to exposed plumbing fixtures and those attached to exterior walls. Mulch on top of irrigation and sewer lines, and cover pools and any other outdoor plumbing installations.

3. Shut the Water Off

If you cut off the water while you’re gone, you’ll virtually eliminate the possibility of a plumbing issue. Water shut-off valves are usually located in basements, crawlspaces, or near water heaters and plumbing fixtures. Turn the handle or wheel until it locks into the closed position. If you have fire sprinklers, leave secondary valves open so you’ll have adequate water flow if a fire breaks out.
