Realizing the brakes in your car aren’t working can cause immediate panic, but you need to try to stay calm and take steps to secure your safety. Afterward, you’ll want to schedule brake service to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

What to Do If Your Brakes Fail

1. Put On Your Hazards

Flip your hazard lights on to let other drivers know that something is wrong so they avoid getting too close to your vehicle. Don’t use your brake pedal unless you have an anti-lock braking system, in which case keep your foot on the pedal while you steer.

2. Gently Downshift

3. Engage the Emergency Brake

Apply the emergency brake, which is either a third pedal on the driver’s side floor or a handle on the steering wheel. Engage the brake slowly to keep your vehicle moving forward, especially if you’re driving at a higher speed. This powerful brake is separate from the main system and can cause you to skid if you’re driving too fast.

4. Find a Safe Area to Pull Over

Look for a safe space to pull over, such as a large section of the shoulder with grass on the other side. Grass and dirt will help you slow down. You can also steer into an empty parking lot or anywhere else that allows you to stop without coming into contact with other vehicles.

5. Turn the Vehicle off at a Complete Stop

Wait until your car has fully stopped before turning it off to avoid losing power steering access. Call your local towing company to pick you up while remaining in your locked car, especially if you’re on the side of a road or highway. Waiting outside of the vehicle can result in injuries from drivers who don’t see you. Use the wait time to schedule brake service with your preferred auto repair center.
