When winter weather arrives, icy power lines, strong winds, and heavy snow can cut your power at any time. To keep your lights and heat on without a visit from the electrician, make sure your generator is prepared and ready to operate. Here are a few tips to winterize your generator and keep the power on.

4 Ways to Prepare Your Generator for Winter

1. Protect the Motor

Your generator is only as reliable as its motor. To protect its critical components, keep the oil full and freshly changed, as suggested by the manufacturer. Also, keep extra oil and filters on hand.

electricianWhile the generator is operating, check the oil level at least every 12 hours and replenish as needed. Electricians also recommend using only heavy-duty cords to keep the voltage load low and guard against motor burn-out.

2. Keep Extra Gas On Hand

Like your car, a generator can’t run on an empty tank. It may be challenging to reach a gas station during bad weather, so keep enough fuel safely stored in approved containers.

After using the generator, empty the tank again. Fuel shouldn’t be kept in an idle fuel tank for an extended time. It can create deposits on metal surfaces that hinder performance or even cause failure.

3. Start It Regularly

Without regular operation, your generator’s battery begins to lose its charge. Without enough power from the cell, your generator won’t start when you need it. That’s why electricians recommend starting and running your generator for at least 30 minutes every 12 weeks to recharge the battery.

4. Keep Dirt Out

If your generator sits unused for long periods, it may begin to collect dust and debris that could interfere with proper start-up and operation. Accumulated moisture can even cause mold to grow, so check and clean your machine monthly.

Consider buying a generator cover or constructing a small enclosure. Not only will it keep out unwanted dirt, but it also protects against potentially damaging pests and weather.
