Sharp chainsaws make the job of cutting or pruning trees quicker and easier. When the blade becomes dull, your efficiency is compromised, and you need to spend more time and energy to finish the job. How can you tell if it is time to sharpen or replace the blades? Here are a few things you need to take note of.

Signs You Need to Sharpen or Replace Your Chainsaw Blades

1. Resistance

Chainsaws with sharp edges rip through wood effortlessly and only require a little force while cutting the lumber. If you sense more resistance than usual, or you need to put more pressure while slicing the wood, then your chainsaw's blades are becoming blunt.

2. Fine Sawdust

Sharp chainsaws produce coarse strands of wood fiber as it cuts through the timber. However, if it starts creating fine sawdust, it is time to change the blade or have it sharpened.

3. Smoke

There are three possible chainsawsreasons why your equipment would start smoking: the chains are not lubricated, the tension is off, or the blades are dull. A dull chain forces the chainsaw to work harder, causing the engine to overheat and smoke.

4. Crooked Cut

Chainsaws must always make smooth, straight cuts. If it produces crooked lines and seems to pull in one direction, it's an indication that at least one side of the chain is dull. This could also be a sign of a worn cutting bar. Bring it in with the chain, so we can inspect them both.

5. Loud Sounds

The equipment's engine typically produces loud sounds, especially as it revs up. But when it creates rattling or clattering noises, and bounces off the timber, it may be time to check the blade. The drive sprocket can cause some loud noises or keep a saw from cutting. Have this inspected after you have used up 3 or 4 chains.
