Perennials are attractive parts of any landscaping design. These recurring blooms fill in gardens and, when cared for properly, return each season to add color and beauty to your outdoor area. If you are considering a few perennials this year, here are some facts to remember.

Basic Facts on Perennials

When should I plant perennials?

The planting schedule depends on the perennial. Plant some varieties, like daylilies, in the autumn. Plant irises and peonies in the spring. More durable blooms like bleeding hearts can generally be planted in late March and April since they can withstand chillier temperatures. They also begin to yellow as the warmer temperatures hit since their life span is contained to the spring months.  While perennials can be planted at other times throughout the year, be sure to provide water and proper care.

When should I cut them back?

Dead foliage is most wisely handled in the fall so that pests and diseases stay at bay throughout the winter. Also, if you notice broken stems and frozen areas, prune your perennials to help them recover faster—even if the weather is still chilly. Pruning away dead areas also helps perennials bloom again every year.

Should perennials be mulched?

landscapingMulch is a smart idea around perennial flowerbeds. Mulch helps retain moisture for roots while keeping weeds out of your landscaping—especially for newly planted perennials. When adding mulch, do not spread it too thick over the crowns of the plants since this can lead to crown rot.

What about fertilizer?

Applying a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorous fertilizer one time in the spring is enough to provide proper nutrients for your perennials. You may also consider another application in the middle of the growing season for late-blooming flowers.
