During lawn aeration, your landscaper will use a special machine to remove small cores of earth from your lawn, a few inches deep and less than an inch thick. This helps loosen soil that’s been compacted by rain and by being walked on. This lawn care task needs to be performed at least once a year for the following reasons.

Why Is Lawn Aeration Part of Yard Maintenance?

1. Better Absorbency

Lawn CareWhen the ground is compacted, it's difficult for water to soak in and reach the roots of your grass. Water tends to puddle or run off, fertilizer sits on top of the ground, and oxygen is blocked by the compacted dirt. Removing cores of earth allows all these necessary materials to soak reach the roots, improving the health of your lawn.

2. Reduced Thatch

Thatch is the layer of dried and shriveled grass blades that forms around the base of the grass plant. As time goes on, thatch grows thicker and starts to change the appearance and color of your lawn. It also blocks water from reaching the ground. Aeration breaks up the thatch and can solve moderate thatch issues without needing further lawn care to address them.

3. More Effective Overseeding

When your lawn starts to look a little thin, lawn care professionals recommend overseeding. This involves scattering new seeds over the existing lawn to encourage new growth without having to tear out the old grass. If the lawn is aerated, the soil is looser, so the new seeds can take root more easily for faster, healthier growth.
