Many people dread moving, but it can be especially stressful if you have to do so while pregnant. Whether you’ll be in your first trimester or your last when it comes time to relocate, you may be wondering how you’ll possibly manage. Thankfully, you can relieve much of the stress surrounding the move by following a few simple tips.

3 Moving Tips for Pregnant Women

1. Keep the Essentials Accessible

If you happen to go into labor before you've unpacked the whole house, you won't want to dig through boxes to find the nursing bras, car seat, or baby monitors. Even if you plan on arriving with plenty of time to unpack before your due date, life can be unpredictable, so set aside the essentials. This is especially important if you're making a major move (from Hawaii to the mainland, for example), as most of your belongings will be unavailable for at least a few weeks while they’re in transit.

2. Know Your Limits

movingIt may be tempting to haul box after box, especially if you've continued working out over the course of your pregnancy; however, doing so could end up causing an overuse injury. Pregnancy produces an abundance of relaxin, a hormone that loosens the ligaments for labor. Coupled with an ever-growing belly, this can make injuries more likely because you won't be able to move your body in the same way you always have. Failing to account for these discrepancies when lifting heavy boxes or furniture is a recipe for disaster.

3. Accept Help Graciously

Moving is a big endeavor, and your doctor will inevitably encourage you to take frequent breaks. When packing the house, for example, it’s wise to stop every 30 minutes and put your feet up to facilitate circulation and prevent swelling in the lower extremities. As such, don't be afraid to enlist help. If friends or loved ones offer to assist, take them up on it, whether they offer help with packing, meal prep, or child care. The less you have to do, the less stress your body—and your baby—will be under.
