When you stay at a hotel, you might depend on the quality of service from the employees and receptionists to make or break your stay. However, the behavior of the guests is just as important to your experience. To optimize your next stay, here are some do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Be considerate of the other guests.

All hotel guests should enjoy the quiet of a private room. After about 10 p.m., the people next door should be able to go to sleep. Around this time, lower your TV and your conversations to a reasonable volume.

Understand the “Do not Disturb” sign.

If you don’t want to be woken up in the morning by the housekeeping staff, place the “Do not Disturb” sign on your door. If it’s not there, employees will likely enter your room for cleaning. Also, if you forget to take the sign off your door the next day, don’t be surprised to walk in on an unmade bed.

Don’t:

Smoke unless in line with hotel policy.

hotelUnless you booked a “smoking” room, you should refrain from smoking in your hotel room, as well as the hotel’s indoor common areas. The smoke will be absorbed by the carpeting, upholstery, and window treatments, and many people suffer from allergy symptoms when inhaling the particles. You may also need to pay a cleaning fee if you don’t abide by the hotel’s policy.

Leave your towels on the floor.

If you can, try to reuse your towels at least once or twice, just as you would at home. By putting them on the floor, you signal to the housekeeping staff that you would like the towels to be washed and replaced. Instead, leave them hung on the rack to avoid wasting water and energy.
