Many people wear contact lenses in order to see clearly without the worry of their glasses falling off, breaking, or clashing with outfits. Though designed to conform to your eyes, corrective lenses may fall out on occasion. Below, you’ll find a helpful guide on what to do if you lose a lens.

What Should You Do When a Contact Lens Falls Out?

1. Try to Find the Lens

As soon as you notice you’re missing a contact lens, start retracing your steps. Narrow down the area where you likely lost the lens, then turn out the lights, and shine your phone’s flashlight over the flooring. Your lens will brightly reflect the light, allowing you to recover it with ease. Wash the lens with warm water and soak it in saline before placing it back on your eye.

2. Manage Everyday Tasks

If you’re nearsighted, use your phone’s camera to navigate obstacles in rooms and improve your depth perception. If you’re at the office, try closing the eye without the lens while reading or working on the computer. If you start to get a headache, take a pain reliever. Since it may be illegal to drive without both lenses, avoid operating your vehicle until you replace the lens or visit your optometrist.

3. Have a Backup Plan

It’s always a smart idea to have a backup plan in the event that you lose a contact lens. Keep spare contact lenses in your briefcase, purse, desk drawer, or glove compartment. Have an eye doctor fit you for prescription glasses that you can wear if you misplace one or both contact lenses.
