Taxidermy is as much an art as it is a science. To give a bird, fish, or deer an animated appearance, the taxidermist must consider everything from the musculature to natural movement. The single most important element, though, is undoubtedly the eyes. Without glossy, polyurethane resin eyes that follow passersby, the entire mount is little more than a lifeless memory of what used to be.

Why Polyurethane Is Ideal for Eyes

The primary purpose of taxidermy is to preserve wildlife as close to its natural state as possible. Naturally, that means giving the subject a lifelike appearance, which you simply can't do without engaging eyes. Over the years, innovators in the industry have tried a number of materials to achieve realistic-looking eyes, but polyurethane resin remains the top pick.

Not only is this material affordable and easy to handle, but it’s also incredibly durable. In other words, polyurethane eyes can withstand the test of time. Translucent resin panels are also ideal for forming fish fins, which means polyurethane can actually serve a number of functions during the taxidermy process—as long as you have the appropriate casting supplies.

How to Create Perfect Eyes

polyurethaneThere are several ways to make polyurethane eyes for your projects. One of the easiest is by mixing the casting resin and catalyst and pouring the solution into small, round molds (after spraying them with a release agent). Vacuum degassing the resin to remove air bubbles is the best way to deal with trapped air but many people will also use pressure pots to help ensure bubble free castings.

To get the “follow me” effect, adhere two pieces to each other by applying a dab of clear glue to their flat sides and pressing them together so you’re left with a totally round globe. Next, paint a small black dot on the back of the globe. This will serve as the pupil.

Finish by applying paint in the color of your choice across the entire backside. When you flip it over and look through the clear front side, you’ll see a glossy iris surrounding a pupil that follows you when you move.
