While you should not drive if road conditions are severe, there are times where you might have to go to work, school, or a doctor’s appointment even when it has been snowing all day. By following the tips below and scheduling a visit to your local auto body shop, you and your car should be well prepared to drive safely in the snow.

How to Drive Safely in the Winter

1. Winterize your vehicle:

As the winter season starts, visit the auto body shop to winterize your car. Doing this can prevent any car-related malfunctions while you are driving in the snow.

auto body shop Branson, MOYou or a trained mechanic should:

  • Perform a battery load test
  • Check/Replace your windshield wiper blades
  • Refill your wiper fluid
  • Check your tire pressure
  • Check your anti-freeze mixture

2. Drive Slowly

If there is snow on the road, or it has been snowing, and temperatures are still below freezing, drive slower to account for lower taction on the road. Drive at a speed where you feel comfortable and safe. If you are going significantly slower than other cars in traffic, don’t feel pressured to speed up. If you need to, turn on your hazard lights so other cars notice you and can pass you.

3. Increase the Distance Between Other Cars

Leave more space between you and the vehicle in front of you. This distance depends on how much space you need between cars in the event you have to come to a sudden stop. Because there is snow on the ground, you have to gradually come to a stop, which will take more time.

4. Don’t Panic If You Start to Slide

Even the most skilled driver can unknowingly drive over a patch of ice, which will cause the car to slide. It is essential that you stay calm and don’t step on the brake or jerk the wheel in any direction. If your front wheels are slipping, slowly release the accelerator and allow the car to slow down. At that point, you should regain control of your vehicle. If it is still sliding, very gently press the brake to decrease your speed.

If your back wheels are sliding, gently turn the wheel in the sliding direction while you lift your foot off of the accelerator until the sliding stops. If you feel that your tire’s tread needs to be checked, go to your auto body shop and ask for them to inspect your tires.
