Garage doors are one of the more overlooked safety issues in homes. The average door weights at least 130 pounds—and up to 350 pounds—and when free-falling, it can cause significant damage. Safety sensors are essential and legally-required additions, so it’s imperative to invest in them to keep your family and belongings safe. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about this must-have feature.

A Guide to Garage Door Safety Sensors

How They Work

garage doorThe average safety sensor systems are composed of two attachments that are placed 6 inches off the ground on your left and right garage door tracking frames. Each has a photo-electric eye that projects an infrared beam. Each eye needs to see this beam for the door to close. If the beam is interrupted, such as when a person or a vehicle passes through, the door will automatically retract. The only way to then close the door while the beam is interrupted is to release it from the overhead motor inside and draw it down manually.

How They’re Beneficial

Garage door safety sensors can be fitted to most modern systems and will protect children and pets when you aren’t around. They’ll keep your vehicle from becoming damaged, and are also an attractive security feature to prospective buyers and home insurance companies. Most importantly, it’s the law. If you plan on selling your home, not having one will raise red flags during a home inspection.

For the best results, have a garage door technician install your safety sensors. They can also inspect the tracking and spring to ensure your door is in good working order.
